Ringor’s superb setup leads Mustangs to OT victory over Bruins

For the third time in three meetings this season, the Melfort Mustangs beat the Estevan Bruins by just one goal.

Despite outshooting the Bruins 46-14, the Mustangs needed overtime to pick up their 12th victory of the season.

Benjamin Polhill made 43 saves on the night for Estevan, while Madden Mulawka needed just 12 for Melfort in the 3-2 contest.

“Estevan has a good track record of good goalies, but we had a good game and found a way in overtime,” said Stangs’ forward Logan Belton.

Belton scored the game-winner in the extra frame in what he called one of the easiest goals of his career.

The reason why was due to one of his newer teammates, who had a pair of assists on the night, including the one in overtime.

“That was probably one of the easiest goals of my life,” Belton joked. “It was a really nice play by Ringor.”

Rylan Ringor helped his club score the first game of the night, back in the first period, coming on the powerplay.

His helper in overtime, however, was beyond impressive as during the 3-on-3 play he shed a defender in the corner with a silky spin move, before going back and forth behind the net, setting up Belton for a tap-in goal on a wrap-around pass.

“Me and Rings have a lot of time together in the summer, so we know where each other go. It was a beautiful play, he kept beating his defender and just snuck back door, and he found me like always, so he’s awesome,” Belton explained.

The win was a perfect cap off to a night which began with the honouring of a former head coach.

Kevin Dickie was presented with a tribute and got to do the ceremonial puck drop.

According to Belton, Dickie who coached back in the 90s, hyped the boys up before the game with a dressing room speech.

“It was awesome to see him come out, he came into the room before the game and gave us a little speech and it really pumped the boys up. We were just really ready to go and it was great to see him here.”

The Mustangs are next in action on Friday night when they welcome the Nipawin Hawks to the Northern Lights Palace.
