The Melfort Fire Department honoured two long-time firefighters during their Awards Night Nov. 8.

Deputy Chief Doug Walsh was honoured for his 35 years in the fire service and is the longest-serving member on the Melfort Fire Department. He has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal for his contributions to Saskatchewan, and the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association Municipal Long Service Medal for the over three decades of work.

The services of Captain Randy Martin were also celebrated at the event. Martin received the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal for 20 years of work in the fire service. All of that service has been with the Melfort Fire Department.

The crowd was a little smaller for part of the event after a crew of firefighters was dispatched to fight a grass fire near the city. The department’s social media page said the call “demonstrated what firefighters experience at any moment of their regular day lives.”
