Hawks Flin Flon bound for battle with Bombers

Nov 22, 2024 | 9:40 AM

The Hawks will make their second trek to northern Manitoba Friday for a showdown with the Bombers in Flin Flon, highlighting a five-game Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) schedule.

The teams met at the Whitney Forum on Sept. 20 on the opening night of the SJHL season, when Tyson Endall made 59 saves in a 4-3 loss. The teams also played in Nipawin on Nov. 9, a 5-2 Flin Flon victory.

The Hawks are coming off a weekend that earned them three points in a shootout in Melfort last Friday and a 1-0 shutout win Saturday in Humboldt. The winter storm that swept through the province early this week forced a postponement of Tuesday’s home game with North Battleford. Hawks Head Coach Tad Kozun said playing on home ice after a strong couple games would have been nice, but the team must now focus on back-to-back games with Flin Fon.

“The mood is definitely a lot better, obviously it would have been nice to get on the ice Tuesday and play a home game after the weekend we had but the weather decided differently. The guys can put their shovels away for the weekend now and we can get back on the ice and play some hockey,” he said ahead of the team’s gameday meeting.

Nipawin had been on an eight-game losing streak until blanking the Broncos last Saturday. Now with points in back-to-back games, Kozun admits the morale has changed around the group, but Kozun cautions getting to overzealous.

“We can’t be satisfied with one good weekend, we’ve got to continue to put them together,” Kozun said. “When you start to feel better about yourself maybe you start letting the little details slip. We have to continue on this path, we have to keep harping the same things. That’s the way we are going to continue the process and get better every day.”

Friday’s game will be broadcast on 750 Beach Radio starting with the pregame show at 7:15 p.m., faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Flin Flon returns to Nipawin to wrap up the home and home set.
