Marguerite Riel Centre outreach team to help those in need in Melfort as winter hits

Nov 22, 2024 | 5:00 PM

The Marguerite Riel Centre in Melfort will be out and about in the community over the next few months.

Their outreach team will be in the streets Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings until the end of March.

“They’ll have soups, sandwiches, hot chocolate, some extra warm clothing,” Director of Operations Joanne Yakowec told northeastNOW.

Yakowec said the outreach team will also be able to connect clients with other resources and do some health and wellness checks for those that might be living out on the street.

“On cold weather nights we may also add some other times as well,” said Yakowec.

There are people that are in need of shelter during the winter, which Yakowec said can be a rough time for people.

The evening outreach will also be setting up in four different locations; at the Melfort Library at 7 pm, the Bluebird Inn at 7:30 pm, the Pederson Pharmacy parking lot at 8 pm, and the Circle K parking lot at 8:30. Yakowec said the Marguerite Riel Centre will post details about the locations and information on the program on their social media sites in the coming days.

“People can come to them as well, and then throughout the rest of the time they’ll be driving around the streets or where we know some of the homeless might be staying and reach out to them that way as well.”

The Marguerite Riel Centre welcomes all donations of clothing and other items. Donations can be dropped off at the Centre or a staff member can often pick them up as well. They don’t take many donations of large furniture, as Yakowec said they just don’t have the room, but they can make connections to help with them.

Anyone who knows of someone that is homeless or in need of a helping hand during the winter can contact the Marguerite Riel Centre or refer the people to the Centre as well.

The regular schedule to the end of March will be:

Tuesday, 5 to 9 pm.

Thursday, 5 to 9 pm.

Saturday, 5 to 10 pm.

As mentioned, extra times may be added in cold weather.
