Slow start sinks Hawks in Flin Flon

Nov 23, 2024 | 12:19 PM

The Nipawin Hawks had a tough first period Friday in Flin Flon giving up a goal 26 seconds into the game en route to a 5-1 loss.

Seeking their first win in northern Manitoba since Sept. 28, 2021, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) club got behind early and couldn’t catch up.

“We weren’t moving our feet, we looked like a team just off a four-hour bus ride,” Kozun said on the postgame show. “We came out in quicksand; we must be better there. You can’t give teams those kinds of leads.”

After the Bombers added another goal early in the second, Carter Anderson got the Hawks on the board with his sixth goal of the season. The teams traded goals over the final 40 minutes which did please the Hawks head coach. In large part, the penalty killing was spectacular allowing just one goal against 10 Bomber powerplays, including several lengthy five-on-three advantages.

“Kudos to our penalty killing tonight, they did a heck of job. They only got one and it was a five-on-three, all we did was kill in the third period, I don’t even know how many minutes we were short but the penalty killing did a really good job tonight,” he said.

Nathan Claydon started in goal for Nipawin, he gave up four goals on 17 shots while Gage Roberts came on in relief making 39 saves.

The teams will meet again in Nipawin on Saturday. The Hawks have lost 14 straight games to the Bombers, and Kozun said the club needs to find a way to change their fortunes.

“What are we going to made of? Are we going to come out and show everybody the Nipawin Hawks team we can be? We have to stop this Jekyll and Hyde kind of thing,” he concluded.

Faceoff is 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
