Avoid residual ponds at Melfort water treatment plant: SaskWater

Nov 27, 2024 | 2:08 PM

Residents of the Melfort area are being urged to avoid the residual ponds near the water treatment plant.

Work has been going on to upgrade the residual ponds, and SaskWater is asking people to steer clear of the area.

“We want to make people aware of a construction site that has inherent hazards to the general public,” Courtney Mihalicz, SaskWater manager of corporate communications, told northeastNOW.

Mihalicz said the ponds have open water or thin ice areas that increase the potential for safety issues.

The project itself includes upgrades to the wastewater ponds, and “work to enhance the slope stability of Melfort Creek to mitigate impacts of erosion,” Mihalicz said.

Danger signs will be installed on the temporary fencing soon and permanent fencing will be installed once the project is complete.

“We appreciate the community and its residents’ support and cooperation as we do our due diligence to ensure everyone’s safety,” said Mihalicz.

Construction has been suspended for the winter and will resume in the spring, with the project expected to be complete next August or September.
