Mustangs win sixth straight after wild third period in La Ronge

Nov 27, 2024 | 6:30 AM

The Melfort Mustangs picked up another two points, Tuesday night in La Ronge.

Melfort took down the Ice Wolves by a score of 4-3, compiling their sixth straight win in the process.

“The biggest thing when you come here is you have to protect the puck, you have to be heavy on your stick, and you have to play with a lot of grit. I thought we had a pretty good 60 minutes of doing all those things, but it’s always close here no matter what,” said Mustangs assistant coach Tye Scherger.

After the first and second periods, the game was tied at one and two goals a piece, respectively.

Then in the third, things got dicey after Melfort scored a pair of goals to grab a 4-2 lead, and tensions boiled over as La Ronge did their best to mount a comeback.

There were only a combined three powerplays in the first two periods, but in the final frame, there were six, including a 4-on-3, 5-on-3, and multiple 5-on-4s. At one point, the two teams even had to play 3-on-3.

Somehow, the Ice Wolves failed to score on their multiple powerplays of the final period, including the aforementioned 5-on-3, however, they did manage to put one in on said 3-on-3.

“That was a crazy third, I don’t even know what was going on there, but glad we got it done,” Scherger added. “The biggest thing too is that once again, we got a one-goal game win. It’s really awesome and just keeps building character for our team.”

The Stangs are now 11-0 in one-goal games this season and are also unbeaten if they are leading the game or tied, after the first 20 and 40 minutes of play.

Kristian Coombs made 35 saves on the night for the victory, while Will Munro scored his first career SJHL goal.

The Blue and Green will return to action on Friday, their lone other game of the week, when they host the Battlefords North Stars.
