Hawks set to welcome Terriers

Nov 29, 2024 | 1:00 PM

The Hawks are back on the ice in Nipawin Friday as the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season continues.

The Yorkton Terriers will make their first trip to the Centennial Arena, the teams met on Oct. 11, a game Yorkton won but was revoked of the victory due to using an ineligible player. Nipawin is coming off a spirited comeback 4-3 shootout loss to the Battlefords on Tuesday. Since scoring twice in the third to force overtime and pick up a much needed point, Head Coach Tad Kozun said the last couple days of practice were positive leading up to the matchup.

“I thought it was a good week of practice getting back to work here shoring up a few things we needed to. We’re looking forward to getting back on the ice tonight,” he said.

The Hawks sit 12th in the SJHL standings, in large part due to the lack of effectiveness on the powerplay. Nipawin’s has an efficiency of just over eight percent with the man advantage, the next lowest team is over 15 percent. The Hawks haven’t scored a powerplay goal since Nov. 9. Kozun said the club focused on the situation immensely this week seeking a shoot first mentality.

“We’re just not creating chances at the net, we’re looking for the extra pass instead of shooting and creating rebounds,” he explained. “When we’re shooting pucks we’re missing the net too much, we must have traffic at the net and create those second and third opportunities.”

Despite the Hawks record (3-14-1-2) most games have been competitive. A couple games have gotten away from the young Hawks group and the scoreboard hasn’t been flattering but Kozun said the team is making progress and is up for the task at hand against the fourth ranked Terriers.

“We know they are high-flying and can score a lot of goals so we must make sure we’re good defensibly and take away their time and space. Keep them to the boards, keep them out of the middle of the ice, it should be a good game,” he added.

Faceoff is 7 p.m.
