Mustangs Embarass Ice Wolves

Henry picks up shutout, first career SJHL victory in 8-0 Melfort blowout

Dec 9, 2024 | 1:32 PM

The Melfort Mustangs pushed their win streak to 10 games Saturday night, in absolutely dominating fashion.

Melfort rolled into La Ronge and then rolled over the Ice Wolves with an 8-0 victory.

The Mustangs have now outscored their opponents 27-4 in their last four games.

Two of those wins came against the Ice Wolves, as the Stangs earned the weekend sweep over La Ronge and now lead the season series four games to none.

The one-sided contest started early, as the Blue and Green scored five of their eight goals in the first period, with the first three coming in just eight and a half minutes.

Five different Mustangs had multi-point nights, as Nolan Roberts and Bo Eisner both had a goal and an assist, Zach Turner had three assists, and Ashton Hutchinson and Reilley Kotai each had a goal and two helpers.

Kotai is now two points clear of Caden Drury for the league lead in scoring, and five goals ahead of Drury and Ethan Dekay for the most markers in the SJHL.

The Abbotsford, B.C. native now has 15 points in his last four games.

Meanwhile, Melfort is nine points ahead of the Battlefords North Stars for the top spot in the standings, with a game in hand.

As for goaltender Josh Henry, the 17-year-old rookie from Prince Albert had a very impressive SJHL regular season debut.

The PA Minto made 37 saves for a shutout to secure his first Junior A win.

Other newcomer Ashton Paul, who made his Stangs debut Friday, picking up an assist, netted his first goal Saturday, as he now has points in his first two games.

Specialty teams were also key for the Blue and Green as they went 3 for 8 on the powerplay and a perfect 6 for 6 on the penalty kill, increasing each of their league-best percentages.

The Mustangs will now wait until Friday to play again, when they meet the Humboldt Broncos for the first of four times this season.

Melfort will host the opening game of the home-and-home set, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.
