Food bank in need

Melfort Food Bank still in need of monetary donations

Dec 12, 2024 | 4:00 PM

The Melfort Food Bank has put a call out for cash donations.

The organization is once again asking the public to help after making a similar request in August.

“We are now in a critical situation as we have funds to operate for a month or 2,” a post on the food bank’s social media page indicated.

The food bank said their utilities cost upwards of $2000 per month, while they purchase about $1000 of food each month, including a litre of milk for each child under the age of 14, eggs, and margarine for hampers.

“We have been giving margarine out once a month and will be doing the same with eggs to try to conserve cash,” said the post. “We are hopeful we will not have to cut (the) milk program.”

The post said the food bank is an essential service for Melfort and area, and they support and assist over 400 people per month, nearly half of whom are children. They said their numbers are growing and seeing new demographics using their services, including seniors, new Canadians, struggling working families, and families with children.

“As an organization that receives no government funding and relies on donations we are asking for monetary donations,” the post said. “We have been in operation for 35 years and now need your help in keeping our doors open and allow us to do what we do, helping people fight food insecurity in Melfort and area.”

There is some good news, according to the post. The organization is reporting that they currently have a solid supply of food, thanks to their food recovery program.

Monetary donations to the food bank can be dropped off at their facility on Broadway Ave. Tuesday to Thursday from 10 to 4 pm. You can also e-transfer to melfortfoodbank@sasktel.net.
