Mustangs Teddy Bear Toss giving Melfort Salvation Army one less thing to worry about

Dec 12, 2024 | 3:46 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will host the Humboldt Broncos this Friday, for their annual Teddy Bear Toss game.

When Melfort scores their first goal, fans will get the opportunity to litter the ice with stuffed animals, all in support of a good cause.

“The teddy bear toss game is always a fan favourite and the players have fun with it too, they’ve been placing their guesses on who they think will get the teddy bear toss goal this year,” said Mustangs’ marketing director Kelsey Pederson.

“The Mustangs are proud to be able to help the Salvation Army for another year with their Christmas Hamper Program. It’s a fun way for our organization to help give back to the community that has shown us endless amounts of support.”

Every stuffed bear and/or animal of your choosing will go directly to the local Salvation Army’s Christmas Hamper Campaign.

That way, each box can have a stuffed animal for the kid(s) of the family that will be receiving the box this holiday season.

“It really does help us, we try and make sure that every child who gets a Christmas hamper also gets a stuffed animal, and having the teddy bear toss has made it possible for us to be able to give each child a teddy bear of some kind,” added Glenna Cryderman of the Melfort Salvation Army.

“It’s really great because we always know that there’s going to be a lot of teddy bears or some kind of stuffed animal, so we don’t have to go out and ask for that in addition to toys.”

It is asked that the stuffed animals be put in a plastic bag before being thrown onto the ice, so they don’t get wet.

At the game, there will also be a kettle set up accepting cash donations. If the cash is brought inside an envelope with your name, address, and the amount inside, you will be eligible for a tax receipt.

“I’ve watched kids bring them to the games for the past couple of years and they’re always really excited to throw them. It’s great to have this sort of participation from the community,” Cryderman continued.

“It’s great to have this partnership with the hockey team, I’m very much into partnerships within the community. The support that the Mustangs give us by doing kettles and by offering the teddy bear toss, it’s just great to have them do that.”

Every December at the Palace, hundreds of stuffed animals are thrown onto the ice for the Teddy Bear Toss.

Last year’s teddy bear goal scorer was Hayden Prosofsky when he sent the stuffed animals flying less than three minutes into the game against the Yorkton Terriers.
