Mustangs ending 2024 with home-and-home against Hawks

Dec 20, 2024 | 4:27 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will wrap up their 2024 portion of this year’s campaign, this weekend with the Nipawin Hawks.

Melfort will begin the home-and-home set, in Nipawin tonight, looking to extend their 13-game win streak.

“We just have to stick to our game and play how we usually play, it’s an exciting last two games, so we want to give it everything we got, and then we get to go home,” said Mustangs’ defenceman Danton Cox.

“There’s gonna be a lot more hard plays on the walls and a lot more battling in the smaller rink. We gotta support guys in tight because there’s not a whole lot of time out there, so there’ll be a lot more quick plays.”

The Mustangs are coming off a 2-1 win in Wilcox on Tuesday, so the ice will shrink drastically in comparison.

The Stangs will also continue to be shorthanded on defence, as their younger players will have to step up once more.

“Some injury troubles here as of late, but we’ve done a really good job of helping everybody out. Those young guys coming in, stepping up, playing really great, and me stepping back, playing D, just doing what we can to make sure we’re playing hard every night,” Cox added.

“We go into every game with the same mindset that we’re gonna work our hardest and play to our systems and try and win every game.”

Melfort is 2 and 0 against Nipawin this season, as the two teams are currently on opposite ends of the standings’ spectrum.

The pair of games will be the last for the two clubs for a couple of weeks, as the SJHL takes a break for the holidays.

Friday night’s puck drop at the Cage in Nipawin is scheduled for 7 p.m.
