Mustangs beat Hawks, enter 2025 on 15-game win streak

Dec 22, 2024 | 8:29 PM

The Melfort Mustangs won for the 15th consecutive time on Saturday night, ending their 2024 year with a 5-1 win over the Nipawin Hawks.

Melfort completed the weekend sweep over their rivals with the victory, as they’re now 4 and 0 against the Hawks this season.

“Credit to our team, the boys worked their butt off and they brought the compete level. With the win that we got, it’s gonna be awesome going to the break,” said Mustangs’ defenceman Zach Turner.

“We’re definitely not tired of winning yet, the boys love it and we want to keep this train rolling.”

There will now be a two-week break for the SJHL, as players return home for the holidays.

An argument could be made that it comes as a bad time for the Stangs as they are one of the hottest teams in the country.

“It can go both ways, the boys want to keep this train rolling, but we know that after the Christmas break, we’re gonna keep rolling and it’s gonna be a great time for us,” Turner added.

“Boys are super excited to go home, I bet they all wish we could stay and keep this train going, but I think it’ll be awesome to get home to friends and family and then keep going here in the second half.”

Special teams were huge for the Blue and Green over the weekend, going 11 for 11 on the penalty kill and 6 for 9 on the powerplay.

The club hosted a skate with the team following the contest, as they got to interact with all the young fans right before Christmas.
