Year in Review: Melfort Special Olympic curling team win gold, named Team of the Year

Dec 26, 2024 | 2:00 PM

It was a stellar 2024 for the Melfort Special Olympic curling team, with a number of significant wins.

Perhaps the largest win for the team was a gold medal at the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary in March while representing Team Saskatchewan.

The gold medal winners featured a couple of Special Olympics veterans and some newcomers.

Coach Brian Kjelshus said the event is incredibly fun for the athletes and coaches alike.

“It’s so much fun, you’re representing your town and your province kind of thing and we had I think three of the parents watching the guys curl and then my assistant coach, her son plays on the team, so we had a lot of family support,” Kjelshus said after the event. “It’s always fun to watch your kids perform in any kind of sport, so that was good and we had lots of support that way.”

The foursome also won the Whitehorse McDonald’s Curling Invitational in Yukon in November. The team finished first in a battle with the host team from Whitehorse, and teams from Ontario and B.C.

The event helped highlight their success from the year, as they were also named Team of the Year for Canada by Special Olympics Canada earlier that month.

The honour came with a ceremony, a gala, and rings.

“Cheryl Bernard walked on stage with us and we had pictures with Jennifer Hedger and Luke Wilson from TSN. It was a pretty fun night because I don’t think any of us are used to being in a room where waiters are walking around with trays of hors d’oeuvres and if you want one you can just take one,” Kjelshus told northeastNOW’s Ben Tompkins.

The team will play several bonspiels this winter.
