The Mayor of Nipawin is looking forward to a full four-year term after the fall municipal election.

Marlon Zacharias told northeastNOW that one of his largest goals was to bring the community back together and move forward with some growth strategies to take the next step into the future.

“The next few years are going to be very exciting and it all started last year,” explained Zacharias, who was first elected in late 2023 in a by-election following the resignation of Rennie Harper.

Zacharias said he enjoys his role as mayor and seeing various projects materialize from the inside and come to fruition is exciting.

“Working with administration and the staff has been absolutely fantastic. We’ve got a great crew of people there,” said Zacharias. “Our council too – everything that they went through in the past has all come to an end and we moved forward, and we were really able to buckle down and get a lot done in that first year.”

The Town of Nipawin has several infrastructure projects in the works include the south corridor infrastructure loop, which will bring a sewer trunk line and lift station to an area along 12th Ave. Zacharias said that project, which will start in early 2025, will allow for more commercial and industrial development to the community.

The sewer and water loop project around the Evergreen Centre will also be completed in the coming year, and Zacharias said they will also have more expansion in the upcoming budget that should be released at the end of January.

The Nipawin Heliport is also a major step forward for the region, according to Zacharias. He said a lot of hours and planning went into the project becoming a reality. Zacharias hopes to have the heliport grand opening early in the new year.

“That’s going to be an absolute great thing for the community to have access to that landing right at the hospital, in terms of transporting and saving valuable time for people that need it.”
