Year in Review: Community mourns after Dobersheck’s murder

Dec 31, 2024 | 9:03 AM

The tragic murder of a woman in Melfort this past spring led to an outpouring of support and love.

Danielle Dobersheck was killed in March, and ceremonies were held to honour her life.

Staff at North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) held a balloon-raising ceremony shortly after Dobersheck’s death. She worked for the organization, and staff members remembered her kindness and dedication as she worked at the NEOSS Treehouse.

“She was not only an exceptional daughter, a devoted mother, and a cherished friend, but also a beacon of light in our NEOSS family,” Executive Director Joan Bear said during the balloon release. “She dedicated herself to uplifting children at Treehouse with every shift that she worked.”

Bear said Dobersheck leaves behind a legacy of compassion and selflessness and sought to make the world a better place, one child at a time.

Several days later, a group of people gathered at Memorial Gardens in downtown Melfort to hold a candlelight vigil in Dobersheck’s memory.

Organizer Lori Constant told northeastNOW at the vigil that she wanted to put together an event to give the community a chance to gather for a chance to reflect and remember.

“We also wanted to think about what we want our community to look like in the future and what we want for all the members of our community and remember that we all have a voice and we all have ways that we can impact change, so it was just an opportunity to connect in that way as well,” Constant said.

Dobersheck’s long-time partner, Cody Chubey, was charged with second-degree murder.

His case is back in court Jan. 28.
