Former Melfort Fire Chief John McDonald passes away

Jan 2, 2025 | 2:28 PM

The Melfort Fire Department (MFD) is mourning the loss of a long-time member.

Former Fire Chief John McDonald passed away suddenly on New Year’s Day at the age of 72.

“It’s a very sad day for the Melfort Fire Department,” said current chief Leonard Whitney.

Whitney said McDonald was great to work with and get along with and was always empathetic at fire scenes.

“We’re usually seeing people on the worst days of their lives, and he always could find that way to try to soothe the people that we were trying to help,” Whitney said.

McDonald was a big part of the department, said Whitney, having spent 40 years as part of the MFD.

“He was family and always will be, and he will be sadly missed.”

A Celebration of Life service for McDonald will be held at the Kerry Vickar Centre Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 2 pm.

According to his obituary, memorial donations may be made to the Melfort Fire Department.
