Back-to-Back Shutouts

Mustangs win millennium record-tying 17th game in a row

The Melfort Mustangs won their 17th consecutive game on Saturday night, taking down the Melville Millionaires once again.

Melfort completed the weekend sweep and season series win over Melville with a 3-0 shutout, the same way they beat them on Friday.

The Mustangs tied the 2011-2012 Humboldt Broncos, with their 17th victory in as many games.

“One thing we never talk about is results, it’s just all about the process, but when you get 17 in a row and it ties the league, it’s just awesome. It shows the character in the room and how these boys come to work, I’m super proud of them,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

Back-to-back shutouts for Kristian Coombs helped the Stangs secure numbers 16 and 17, as the 19-year-old netminder now has three on the year.

He stopped all 35 shots he faced on the weekend, as the Blue and Green’s defence was very strong in both games.

“All around, we’re doing pretty good, especially in our D zone. Back-to-back shutouts, good on Coombs as well, the boys are committing to the D zone, which is nice to see,” Scherger added.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Tuesday when they head to Battleford to face the North Stars.
