Hawks grounded by Klippers in Kindersley

Jan 12, 2025 | 10:02 AM

The Nipawin Hawks were blanked 2-0 in Kindersley on Saturday.

Netminder Gage Roberts kept the visitors in the game with the Klippers making 37 saves in the loss, the Hawks eighth in a row. With just eight shots of their own, Nipawin Assistant Coach Derek Hutton wasn’t pleased on the postgame show after the loss.

“It’s kind of what I said to the boys after the first and second when we had like four shots or whatever it was, that tells me we are playing scared. We played selfish, we just weren’t clicking,” Hutton huffed.

After a goalless opening period the Klippers scored on a powerplay giving themselves a 1-0 lead they never relinquished in the second period. Despite being outshot by 31 the game came down to the final minute when the Klippers scored into an empty net with Gage Roberts on the bench for an extra attacker.

The Hawks are still in search of their first win of 2025, their playoff chances are fading fast and the group needs to continue to build over the final 21 games according to their first year assistant coach.

“Me and Tad (Kozun, Head Coach) are putting our best foot forward every single day, these kids are showing up and putting the work in in practice, I think that’s why it’s so frustrating for us after a performance like this,” he added.

Roberts made 37 stops overall keeping the Hawks in the game.

The Hawks won’t have to sit on the loss long, Nipawin and Kindersley meet again Sunday afternoon. Hutton added the team will regroup overnight and try to secure a weekend spilt at the West Central Events Centre.

“A quick reset, get back to the hotel and get a good meal in us, get a good rest. Have a good active day before we get to the rink and just be ready to go,” Hutton concluded.

Faceoff is set for 4 p.m., the pregame show of Nipawin Chrysler Dodge Hawks Hockey on 750 Beach Radio starting at 3:45 p.m.
