Melfort RCMP Staff Sargeant issues quarterly report to council

Council in Melfort heard from the RCMP Detachment Commander at their meeting Monday night.

Staff Sgt. Ryan Case presented his quarterly update to council, and it seems the cooler weather has had an affect on the crime rate.

Case said the number of cases in the last quarter is down in Melfort, the detachment area, and the province as a whole.

He told council that about 45 per cent of their workload is centred in Melfort, with approximately 10 per cent coming from James Smith Cree Nation, and all other communities in the single digits.

Council also heard the RCMP encourages people to contact them if they spot anything suspicious in their neighbourhood. Many take to social media sites to warn others about people checking vehicle doors, garages, and sheds to see if they are open to steal the contents inside.

“If you don’t call, nothing can be done,” said Case at the council meeting.

He presented three examples of social media posts about people rummaging around properties that were not reported to the RCMP. However, a member of the detachment did spot one of the posts about vehicle checking and followed up with the person who posted the information. Through the member’s efforts, suspects were identified and charged.

Case also updated council about what the RCMP is working toward, including the potential of having the cell block at the detachment operate on a 24-hour basis. He said that would be helpful to police because prisoners can always be lodged, and guards would be available.

The topic of funding was also put forward. Case said he recognizes the cost of policing to the City of Melfort, and ultimately its residents. He assured council he is doing everything possible to limit costs to the city while still providing the services that are required.
