Mustangs host Klippers for final meeting of the season

The Melfort Mustangs will welcome the Kindersley Klippers to town tonight, in what will be the fourth and final meeting of the season.

Melfort has won the first three matchups on the year, therefore having the opportunity to complete the season sweep.

“They’re a good team, they’re a little younger than last year, but they just got a couple of new key pieces in the trade deadline, so we got to look out for that. We don’t go in expecting to win every game, every game is a challenge, and everybody can beat everybody in this league. We got to go in with the mindset though that we are going to win and that we’re the top dogs, because that’s what we’ve been doing, and that’s why we’ve been winning. I think if we just keep doing that, we’ll be good,” said Mustangs’ forward Kaleb Binner.

“They don’t like our forecheck too much, so we have to be hard on their defence and make them make mistakes. That’s what we like to do to every team, we like to put them out of their comfort zone, and it’s been working for us. Play fast, play physical, and teams don’t really like to play against us. That’s been working for us, especially against Kindersley, so if we do that tonight, we’ll be good.”

The Mustangs seemed to do all of what Binner said on Saturday night against the Yorkton Terriers, as they cruised to a 5-1 victory, getting them back in the win column.

Melfort had their 17-game win streak ended last Tuesday in North Battleford, so Wednesday night is an opportunity to begin a new streak.

“It was a huge statement win, especially against a very good team like Yorkton. I thought we played well as a team, a full 60 minutes, and it was good to get back in the win column. We have 25 guys on this team who hate losing, so it feels extra good to win that one,” Binner added.

“We just have to keep playing how we have been if we want to get on a tear again. We’ve been pretty solid this year, and I feel as a team, we’re only getting better. It’s now time to grind with playoffs coming up, we take each game a little bit more seriously as we go along, but if we keep playing our game we’ll be good.”

Puck drop between the Mustangs and the Klippers tonight goes at 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.
