P.A., Melfort highways snow covered; travel not recommended around Nipawin

Jan 16, 2025 | 9:15 PM

Travel is not recommended on Hwy 55 and surrounding junctions near Nipawin.

A snapshot of the Highway Hotline just before 9 p.m. Thursday showed conditions including swirling snow, snow drifts, ice and zero visibilty from Meath Park to Choiceland, Nipawin and Carrot River areas.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the North East earlier in the day. Forecasters were predicting 10 to 15 cms of snow for the region and winds gusting up to 60 km/h.

A snowfall warning is also in effect for the Prince Albert area. However, roads weren’t as bad around Prince Albert and Melfort where the primary condition of the highways was listed as snow covered. Visibility was good around Tisdale where the area highways were only partly covered with snow. However, Environment Canada warned conditions could change rapidly.

Travelers are being encouraged to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve, particularly where travel is not recommended. With the high winds, Environment Canada also suggested ensuring that shelter is provided for pets and outdoor animals.

The snow is expected to taper off by Friday morning.
