Hawks beaten by Broncos in Nipawin

The Hawks put together perhaps their best period of 2025, but it wasn’t enough as Nipawin was ousted 6-1 by Humboldt Tuesday.

Hosting the Broncos for the first time this Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season, each team was looking to take the upper hand in the season series after each club won in Humboldt back in November.

Humboldt scored the games first goal on a powerplay before rookie forward Jack Shierau knotted the game at 1-1 with his first career SJHL goal late in the period.

The good news ended there for the home team, Humboldt scored early in the second, again a couple minutes later on the powerplay and never looked back cruising to the win.

“I thought we had really good pushback after they scored that goal,” Head Coach Tad Kozun said after the game. “I thought we came out a little flat in the second, gave up a couple quick ones.”

Special team units were an issue again for the Hawks, Nipawin failed to score on six powerplay chances including three in the first period and another pair in the second period. Humboldt was perfect on the first two man advantages they had before failing to score on the third chance. Kozun said those stats have been a regular occurrence all year.

“At the end of the story it’s special teams that obviously hurt us. When you go oh-for-six on the powerplay where you have some good opportunities, obviously our penalty killing gave up two again. We must shore up special teams, they are the difference in many of our games,” Kozun admitted.

The Hawks return to the ice Friday in Yorkton seeking their first win since Dec. 13. Nipawin has two wins against the Terriers this year with a league enforced forfeiture, the Hawks lost in overtime in the other meeting. Friday’s game at Westland Arena will cap the season series with the Terriers who currently sit tied for fourth in the SJHL standings.

“We just have to make sure we put a good 60 minutes together,” Kozun continued. “We just can’t just be satisfied with a good period here or there. When you are in a tie game, you have to push, you know the other team is going to push harder. We had some chances but obviously it wasn’t enough.”

The Hawks close the week Saturday at home against the Mustangs.
