Hawks on road in Yorkton to close season series with Terriers

For the final time this Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season, the Nipawin Hawks will take on the Terriers in Yorkton.

The teams have faced off three times this year, the Hawks have a forfeit win, an overtime victory and an overtime loss in the season series. Riding a 10 games losing streak, the Hawks hope a labouring Terriers team that has won just once in their last six games is what the visitors need to get back in the win column. Head Coach Tad Kozun said the team went back to basic details in preparation of the game after a 6-1 loss at home to Humboldt on Tuesday.

“Obviously we had to look at things we can do better on the penalty kill and the powerplay we have to find ways to generate offence,” Kozun admitted after giving up two powerplay goals to Humboldt. “We made a few changes there; we just must execute at a higher level. We know what we need to do on the ice, just can we do at it at the level we need?”

In their last four games the Hawks have been outscored 24-4 with the other teams generating eight powerplay goals in 13 opportunities. On the flip side, Nipawin has also had 13 man advantages in the last four games scoring no goals up a man. Kozun said Nipawin has played the Terriers tough despite the 26 point difference in the SJHL standings.

“They are a team we’ve played really well; we have all year. The biggest thing is you have to be on the defensive side, they are a team that looks for opportunities, they have some guys that can score so you can’t give them time or space. We need to take away their options and make sure no one gets behind us,” Kozun added.

Faceoff at Westland Arena is set for 7 p.m., the game will be broadcasted on 750 Beach Radio starting with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m.
