Divisional Clash

Mustangs welcome Ice Wolves for final home game before Showcase

Jan 24, 2025 | 4:52 PM

The Melfort Mustangs welcome the La Ronge Ice Wolves to town on Friday night for a divisional clash.

It’s been over a month and a half since the two teams met, despite the fact that they’re schedule to face one another eight times this season.

The long break between games is due in large part to a postponement exactly two weeks ago when La Ronge was supposed to visit the Northern Lights Palace, however, they had issues with their team bus.

In total, four of the eight games have been played so far, with Melfort winning all of them by a combined score of 21-7.

The Mustangs are riding a three-game win streak heading into tonight’s matchup, coming off a huge comeback in Yorkton this past Friday.

The Stangs were down 3-1 midway through the game before rallying off six straight goals en route to a 7-3 victory.

The Blue and Green are winners of 20 of their last 21 games.

As for the Ice Wolves, they’ve only won two of their last eight contests and one of their last four.

Melfort continues to sit atop the SJHL standings with a 31-5 record, which translates to 62 of a possible 72 points through 36 games (.861 win percentage).

They also have the best goal differential (+69) and least goals against (71) in the league.

La Ronge, meanwhile, is currently in ninth place, six points back of the Kindersley Klippers for the final playoff spot, as they sit with a 16-20-1-1 record.

For the Mustangs, this evening’s game will be their last home contest before this coming week’s SJ/MJ Showcase.

Eight skaters will join head coach Trevor Blevins in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with six total games on the schedule.

Before they head a province east, the Stangs will play another division rival tomorrow, when they head to Nipawin to face the Hawks.

Friday night’s contest at the Palace is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
