Mustangs take season series over Ice Wolves with another comeback victory

Jan 25, 2025 | 4:02 PM

The Melfort Mustangs earned the season series win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday night by beating them for the fifth time this season.

Now 5-0 against La Ronge on the year, this particular contest didn’t come easy for Melfort as they had to pull off another comeback.

Trailing 2-0 early in the second period, the Mustangs scored five of the next six goals to take a 5-3 lead into the final frame.

From there, the two teams traded markers, as the game finished with a 6-4 score.

“Definitely having slow starts. Coach comes into the room every period, and gives us a little bit of a boost to pump us up and I think that helps obviously, but we got to start finding a way where we don’t have to come back,” said forward Ashton Paul.

“It’s great winning against a team like that, especially because they’re a division rival. They’re a hard team to play against, so it’s great to close out that series and get the job finished.”

Now on a four-game heater and winners of 21 of their last 22, the Stangs will play their last game before the SJ/MJ Showcase break, tonight in Nipawin.

The Blue and Green have played the Hawks four times this season, winning all four by a combined score of 18-8.

They will now have another opportunity to earn a season series win against a division rival.

“We’re gonna have to dial in for sure, our warm-ups, coming to the rink, and obviously getting prepared, that’s always a good start. We just need to have a better warm-up and dial it in on those sorts of things,” Paul added.

“We didn’t have the greatest start last time we were there, trailing 2-0 after the first two periods. They’re a good young team and we need to be ready to go.”

Saturday’s contest at the Cage will begin with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
