Poor Special Teams

Mustangs fall short against Hawks

The Melfort Mustangs lost for the first time all season to their division rival, as the Nipawin Hawks got the better of them.

Melfort suffered a 4-1 defeat in Nipawin, ending their four-game win streak and ending an 11-game losing streak for the Hawks in the process.

“Overall, we were just too soft, all over the ice tonight. We didn’t want to win battles or compete in the hard areas, so you’re not going to come out on top,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

Along with not playing physical enough, special teams were an issue for the Mustangs, as they lost both sides.

Despite four powerplays, including one which was five minutes, Melfort failed to capitalize on the man advantage, while the Hawks had two powerplay goals.

“They scored two out of three times, our kill didn’t have it tonight. We didn’t take away their time and space and we weren’t willing to block shots. Then, on our powerplay, we just looked too fancy and tried to make extra plays, instead of getting shots on net with traffic in front,” Scherger added.

The Mustangs will now have a week in between games, as the SJ/MJ Showcase will go on Tuesday and Wednesday.

While eight players and Trevor Blevins travel to Manitoba, Scherger will make sure the boys back home get some extra work to get things right.

“All the best to the guys who get to go to the Showcase. As for the guys who are staying back, they’re gonna get back to work because it’s going to be a tough one in the Zoo next Saturday, so we’re going to make sure we’re ready to go,” concluded Scherger.

The Stangs will play next, this coming Saturday, when they travel to Flin Flon to take on the Bombers for the first time in nearly three months.
