Scams and fraud

Scams and fraud to be addressed at meeting in Melfort

Jan 29, 2025 | 3:35 PM

Residents of Melfort have an opportunity to learn more about the dangers of fraud and scams.

The Carrot River Valley chapter of the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan (STS) is hosting a meeting on the importance of recognizing and dealing with scams and frauds.

President Sue Amundrud told northeastNOW they try to bring in a guest speaker annually to address a topic of concern to retired teachers and others in the community.

She said one of the interesting sessions offered to delegates at their provincial meeting was on frauds and scams. At that meeting, a member of the Saskatoon Police Service addressed delegates and Amundrud said it was well received.

“Our chapter executive thought this was something worthwhile offering to our local members and, as this topic is relevant to a wider audience than just retired teachers, to the community and area as a whole,” Amundrud said.

Amundrud approached the Melfort RCMP detachment, and they showed interest in making a presentation at the event. Staff Sgt. Ryan Case told northeastNOW he will be focusing on as many scams that are currently circulating as possible. They include mass marketing scams that ask people for personal or banking information, and those that convince people to provide gift cards, iTunes cards, and the like.

Case said he will discuss the scams, how to recognize that they are a scam, and how to protect yourself against them.

The presentation will be held Feb. 5 at 1:30 at the All Saints Anglican Church in Melfort.
