SJ/MJ Showcase a wrap as nine Mustangs return to Melfort

The 2025 SJ/MJ Showcase wrapped up late Wednesday evening in Winnipeg, Manitoba as the best SJHL players have now returned to their respective clubs.

Nine of the 60 that went to the annual showcase were Melfort Mustangs, and they left their stamp on the six games played.

“Guys playing hard for both games, really impressed with our team and specifically, our Mustang players represented us well and did a great job, both on and off the ice. I felt that even though we were on the short end in the second game, I thought the compete was there and I thought we were right in the mix. We were battling some outside factors that maybe factored into the result, but guys pushed through and did their best,” said Melfort head coach Trevor Blevins.

Eight of the nine Stangs players were on the 20U SJHL White squad which fell 6-4 Wednesday afternoon.

Overall, they went 1 and 1 over the two-day event, while the SJHL as a whole went 2-2-2.

Reilley Kotai was the only member of the Blue and Green on the scoresheet, scoring his second goal of the tournament.

“We didn’t quit, guys had lots of energy on the bench and were pushing through. What was great about it was that we were down by two goals at one point, and then we had an opportunity to tie it up with the goalie pulled, faceoff in the offensive zone and on the power play. Unfortunately, just a bad bounce that ended it and that’s the way it goes sometimes, but it wasn’t from a lack of effort or compete,” Blevins added.

“I believe for our players coming back, the experience gives them a bit of a boost. I might have a little bias but I thought we were part of the elite group on the ice when we compare the two leagues. I thought our guys were definitely in the top quartile, they did a great job and it showed that we could play with pace and compete, and we took control of the play at times which was great to see.”

Melfort will return to regular action this Saturday, their lone contest of the week, when they head up north to Flin Flon to face a streaking Bombers group.
