Mustangs’ five powerplay goals fuel them to victory against Red Wings

Feb 6, 2025 | 9:23 AM

The Melfort Mustangs used an excellent powerplay Wednesday night to push them over the Weyburn Red Wings.

Melfort had five goals, all of which came on the powerplay, in what ended up being a 5-2 win.

“We had some guys out and some guys came in, and it just clicked right away. Blevs (Trevor Blevins) had us doing some stuff in practice and I think that really helped too, and we just capitalized on our opportunities,” said Mustangs’ forward Ashton Hutchinson.

“We have lots of good players and we talk lots in the intermissions and we hang out lots outside of the rink, so I think just building that chemistry every day is what shows on the ice out there.”

The Mustangs have now started off their busy four games in five days week with a pair of victories, the first of which came over the Terriers in Yorkton on Tuesday.

This back-to-back game response also comes after Melfort had dropped back-to-back matches for the first time all season.

“After those losses, we had lots of heart to hearts, and I think we just woke up there. We all love each other in that room and we wanna battle for each other every night, so when we do that, we can beat any team,” Hutchinson added.

Hutchinson, who had a goal and two assists, joined five other Stangs players with multi-point efforts, which included Zach Turner, Zac Somers, Logan Belton, Zayden Sadlemyer, and Ashton Paul.

Meanwhile, Bryson Aikens made his first appearance in the lineup in nearly three months.

“It was awesome to see him back out there,” concluded Hutchinson. “He’s a good player and he had it going tonight. He had lots of hits and he actually set me up pretty good there but I didn’t put that one in. I’ll definitely get it to him next time though.”

Blue and Green netminder Madden Mulawka made 19 saves for the win. The club will next play on Friday when they host the Nipawin Hawks at the Palace.
