Melfort Council approves grant application to help pave pathway network

Feb 11, 2025 | 10:03 AM

The City of Melfort is applying for the Active Transportation Fund Grant as they look to pave more of their walking paths.

Council passed a motion to apply for capital funding through the Canada Public Transit Fund to be used for the 2026-2030 Melfort Pathway Network Improvement Project.

That project would see several sections of the path system undergo significant improvements.

Director of Public Works Kalyna Cipywnyk told northeastNOW the city applied for the same grant in 2022.

“We received funding to pave over two kilometres of pathways in Spruce Haven Park,” Cipywnyk said. “We had a very positive experience with the grant.”

Cipywnyk said when the city was notified that the grant was open again, they wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.

The pathways are heavily utilized, and Cipywnyk said the city sees the grant as an opportunity to pave more of the trail so residents can use it to not only walk, but to rollerblade or bike.

“Being able to enhance that for our residents is a really positive outcome,” Cipywnyk said.

It’s unknown exactly when the city will learn whether their grant application has been approved. Cipywnyk said it depends on the number of submissions the grant program receives.

“It could be certainly six to eight months from now until we receive an answer.”

Pathway segments that would be improved should the grant be approved would be McDonald Avenue from Main Street to Burns Avenue, behind properties from Hamilton Avenue to Sask. Drive, Sask. Drive from Quebec Street to Broadway Avenue, Spruce Haven Road to Stonegate Road, Stonegate Blvd. to East Service Road, and Spruce Haven Road from Shadd Drive to Frost Drive.

The total estimated cost of the improvements would be just over $1.1 million, with the grant covering 60 per cent of that cost.
