New cancer treatment program available in Saskatchewan
For cervical cancer patients in Saskatchewan, the new Interstitial High-Dose-Rate (HDR) Gynecological Brachytherapy program is a game changer.
The Saskatchewan Cancer Agency (SCA) announced Tuesday the service will mean patients no longer have to leave the province for treatment.
“A lot of people refer to it as the internal radiation,” said Dr. Jocelyn Moore, a radiation oncologist with the SCA.
Moore explained that while they do a lot of external radiation — a shorter treatment similar to X-Ray — internal treatment is more invasive and patients either have permanent radioactive sources implanted within the tumour, or a device is inserted.
