Last trip to the Mel

Mustangs head north to La Ronge for final time this season

Feb 15, 2025 | 3:00 PM

The Melfort Mustangs hit the highway north to La Ronge Saturday night, visiting the Ice Wolves for the final time this season.

Melfort will enter the contest on a five-game win streak after winning all four of their games last week. Most recently, they took care of business at home on Thursday with a 4-3 victory over the Weyburn Red Wings.

The Mustangs are 5-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) this season against La Ronge, outscoring them 27-11 on the year.

The Ice Wolves still have two trips to the Palace remaining on their schedule, Mar. 9 and 12 respectively, with the latter being a make-up game.

And while 34 points and eight spots in the SJHL standings separate these Sherwood Division rivals, it’s rarely easy at the Mel Hegland Uniplex, as the Blue and Gree will have to be ready to face a team fighting to get back into the playoff picture.

“It’s a tough rink to play in, it’s obviously small so you gotta work hard in the corners and be really physical with a good forecheck. You always have to stay on your toes because things happen fast and it’s kind of like ping pong out there,” said Stangs’ forward Danton Cox.

Puck drop tonight is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with the pregame show beginning at 7:15 p.m. on 105CJVR as Ben Tompkins has the call.
