Mustangs hold off furious Ice Wolves comeback in La Ronge

Feb 16, 2025 | 4:39 PM

The Melfort Mustangs had a comfortable 3-0 lead in La Ronge Saturday night with nine minutes to go in the third period.

Then, things got a little too interesting as the Ice Wolves nearly pulled off the comeback, scoring twice on the powerplay, once with the net empty.

All in all, Melfort was just able to hold on, securing a 3-2 victory, their sixth in a row.

“The biggest thing is just finding a way to get it done up here, it’s always tough to play in this barn, and you never enjoy playing here, but the biggest thing is just finding a way. In these games on the road, you just have to find a way and we did,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“We’re comfortable with one-goal leads, no matter if it’s the first, second or third period, the whole season we’ve been winning games with one-goal leads. It’s things like getting pucks out, getting pucks in and playing simple when you have the lead with that much time left.”

All five goals in the game were scored on the man advantage, as the two teams had a combined 13 powerplays.

The Mustangs have now mustered up six consecutive victories following their lone two-game skid of the season and are a perfect 6 and 0 against the Ice Wolves this season, sweeping their four trips to La Ronge on the year.

“We’ve had that dog mentality again, those two losses really got to the guys and they were frustrated, so everyone is buying in again,” Scherger added.

“La Ronge plays well in their home rink, it’s a true advantage for them, so winning all four here this year is awesome and good on the boys to find a way to get it done here every time.”

The Stangs will next see the ice on Tuesday when they travel to Battlefords to take on the North Stars.

Last time around, North Battleford ended the Blue and Green’s 17-game win streak, so this particular contest could play as a revenge game for Melfort.
