Dominant third period leads to Hawks win

The Nipawin Hawks clawed back in the third period Sunday on home ice scoring a handful of unanswered goals on route to a 5-2 win over Notre Dame.

Looking to cap another positive week despite not heading to the post season, the Family Day long weekend crowd had nothing to cheer about until the third period.

With Nipawin down 2-0 going to the final frame, Carter Anderson got the Hawks on the board, Mason Karakochuk tied the game, Brady Seabrook scored the winner, Ashton Tait added his first goal in two months and Anderson sealed the win with an empty net marker. Seabrook said the comeback win felt good among the group.

“A great way to finish of the weekend and I am super proud of the guys,” he said.

After being shut out by Weyburn on Friday, offense was hard to find for the Hawks until the third period against a tiring Notre Dame group coming off back-to-back losses in Flin Flon on the weekend. Seabrook’s fourth Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) goal turned out to be his first game winner in his recollection.

“I don’t think I have one to be honest,” he chuckled after the game. “It feels pretty good. Great pass from Noah (Heinrich) there, just glad it went in.”

Gage Roberts was steady making 21 saves for his sixth win of the season. The Hawks had 42 shots on the Notre Dame net.

The Hawks will travel to Weyburn Friday to begin a three game road trip. Nipawin has nine games remaining against nine different opponents. Now mathematically eliminated from the postseason, Seabrook said the group will enjoy one last road trip together and find out who wants to be part of the future in Nipawin.

“We’ve got to end this year on the right note, and everything builds for next year so these next couple games are important. I am looking forward to it because we are all coming together here,” Seabrook concluded.

All three games of the southern road trip including stops in Estevan and Notre Dame will be broadcast on 750 Beach Radio.
