Japan and Dominican Republic to open Softball World Cup tournament in Prince Albert

The stage has been set for the most prestigious tournament in men’s softball.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has announced the groups and schedule for the WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup Finals, set to take place at Prime Ministers’ Ballpark in Prince Albert July 8 – 13.

Japan and the Dominican Republic will open the tournament on Tuesday, July 8 at 11:30 a.m. followed by Argentina vs. Venezuela. Defending champions Australia will take on USA in the third game of the day while arch-rivals Canada and New Zealand will be featured in the marquee matchup at 8:30 p.m.

The teams will be split into two groups, with the top two from each advancing to the Super Round July 11 and 12. The World Championship Final will take place on July 13 at 2 p.m.

In a press release, the WBSC said this year’s finals are expected to be ‘one of the most competitive editions in tournament history.’

Seven of the eight teams competing in Prince Albert have previously won a medal in the event. The Dominican Republic will be looking to reach the podium for the first time.

The first WBSC Men’s World Softball Cup was held in 1966 in Mexico City. Since then, 44 different nations have participated in the event.

Last summer, Prince Albert hosted the WBSC World Cup Qualifier event which had an economic impact on the city of $3.66 million.
