Weekend Rivalry

Mustangs welcome Broncos to begin another home-and-home set

Feb 21, 2025 | 2:08 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will welcome the Humboldt Broncos to town on Friday night, beginning the final home-and-home set of the season between the two local rivals.

Melfort swept the first and only weekend set this year against Humboldt, winning 3-2 and 5-2 respectively, on Dec. 13 and 14.

The 3-2 victory came at home and didn’t come easy, as the Mustangs had to dig themselves out of a 2-0 hole after the first period.

They then won pretty handily at the Elgar Petersen Arena, leading 2-0 after one and 4-1 after two.

During that quick two-game set, Stangs’ forward Ashton Hutchinson was the best player on the ice, scoring three goals and adding three assists.

His linemates Zac Somers and Logan Belton were also quite good, with Somers scoring once and also recording three assists, while Belton produced four helpers.

What will be different this time around, however, is that Dazza Mitchell will likely be in the Broncos net, as Mitchell was still a member of the Weyburn Red Wings at the time of the two clubs’ last meeting.

The Blue and Green enter tonight’s contest on a seven-game winning streak, winning their only other match of the week on Tuesday, in North Battleford, against the Stars.

Melfort won that one 8-6, with a four-goal third period to earn the comeback.

Mustangs’ assistant coach Tye Scherger said after that particular game that the focus had to be on defence this weekend.

“On the defensive side, we definitely need a bit of work. It’s not gonna be easy on Friday or Saturday, so we have a big test coming our way.”

Humboldt is playing much better of late, going 7-2-1 (W-L-OTL) in their last 10, after sitting around the .500 mark all season.

They’ve now moved up to sixth place, which is first in the division, albeit by just a point, while simultaneously being just one point shy of fifth place.

Puck drop between the Broncos and the Stangs is set for 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Northern Lights Palace.
