The Nipawin Hawks found a way to get to Angelo Zol Friday in Weyburn defeating the Red Wings 7-5 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) play.

After the first period, the Hawks were down 1-0 and had just one recorded shot on goal compared to Weyburn’s 16, but Nipawin clawed back in the second to outlast the Red Wings and pick up their first win of the season against Weyburn in the Hawks final attempt.

Finley Radloff tied the game 1-1 early in the second period, after Weyburn retook the lead, Konnor Watson and Mason Karakochuk combined for goals six seconds apart giving the visitors their first lead of the game.

The Red Wings tied the score 3-3 prior to the third period beginning. Nipawin’s Eric Hoiness and Van Taylor Scored giving the Hawks a 5-3 lead. Back-to-back powerplay goals for Weyburn knotted the score 5-5. The Hawks answered with Radloff’s second of the game and seventh powerplay goal of the year, Carter Anderson capped the scoring reaching the 20 goal plateau. Taylor said the gameplan wasn’t perfect, but the team found a way to win.

“I thought it was a good way to win,” Taylor said after the game. “It wasn’t the best first period but we bounced back in the second and third and found a way to win.”

Gage Roberts was stellar in the Nipawin net making 41 stops, Zol gave up seven on 21 Nipawin shots. Taylor’s goal was Nipawin’s third shorthanded marker of the season and the first for Taylor who has four goals in his rookie season.

“I just saw a guy bobble the puck at the blueline, I’m like oh, let’s give’r. I just went down, picked the spot and scored,” he recounted of the goal.

Watson had four points in the game, Karakochuk added two assists to his goal as well.

Nipawin will travel to Estevan Saturday seeking a season sweep of the Bruins. Taylor said with a win on opening night of a three game road trip it’s time for the team to get greedy.

“Winning the first one is huge, let’s just keep it rolling and take all three,” Taylor added.

Faceoff is 7 p.m. from Affinity Place, the pregame show of Nipawin Chrysler Dodge Hawks Hockey on 750 Beach Radio begins at 6:45 p.m.
