Mustangs fall to Broncos, drop first one-goal game this season

Feb 22, 2025 | 1:26 AM

For the first time all season, the Melfort Mustangs lost a game that was decided by just a single goal.

The Mustangs fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Humboldt Broncos Friday night, to begin the home-and-home set with their local rivals.

The contest, which took place at the Northern Lights Palace, also gave Melfort just their second home loss of the season and their first when leading after the first period.

“I think we were the dominant team in the first and third periods, we kind of fell asleep for the first 10 minutes of the second period, and that cost us the game there. We’re gonna have to find a way to play a full 60 tomorrow and take it to them,” said Stangs’ captain Ty Thornton.

“Obviously we have to be better tomorrow, it doesn’t matter that it was just our second loss here because it’s still a loss. Tomorrow we have to look forward to the game and get under their skin, hit them hard and start rough very early.”

The positives for the Blue and Green are that they still got a point, extending their point streak to eight games, and they also outshot the Broncos 45-22.

Humboldt native and 17-year-old Brady Holtvogt played the hero, stopping 42 shots, along with the pair he saw in the shootout.

Holtvogt’s bench was very happy when they got the win, and according to Thornton, his team needs to show the same energy on Saturday.

“Everyone loves playing Humboldt, it’s a big rivalry of ours, especially pushing for standings and playoffs here. We gotta bring all we can, as it does mean a lot, especially towards the end of the season,” Thornton added.

“We gotta get bodies at the net to beat him, just like we did on the last goal we scored. We had traffic in front of the net, and we got to get a guy in front every time. We need to get nice hard shots there and get to the greasy areas.”

Puck drop Saturday between the Broncos and the Mustangs from the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt is scheduled for 7 p.m.
