Mustangs and Bombers set for biggest weekend of the season

Feb 28, 2025 | 3:06 PM

The Melfort Mustangs and the Flin Flon Bombers will play each other twice this weekend, in what may be called the biggest games of the regular season so far.

Beginning Friday night in Melfort, the top two clubs will face off for the seventh and eighth times this year, their final scheduled matchups.

“I’d say these are the biggest games of our season so far, it’s going to be huge. We’re down a lot of guys still, but that can’t matter because we’re still going to do our best with what we have. Hopefully, we can get these four points up for grabs this weekend,” said Mustangs’ forward Austin Shepherd.

“It’ll obviously be big to start off on the right foot because I think the first 10 minutes of the game will likely decide the outcome. We have to come out hot and everything has to be rolling, and obviously, we have to play a full 60 to be successful.

With just three points this weekend over Flin Flon, a win and an extra-time loss, would secure Melfort the top spot in the league this year heading into playoffs.

“To be honest we haven’t really discussed that fact this week, it’s not something we’re actively trying to think about and focus on. We just want to keep going and keep getting better and carry that into the playoffs,” Shepherd added.

The Mustangs are 3 and 0 against the Bombers at home this season, outscoring them 13-5.

It has, however, been a different story on the road, as the Stangs have lost all three at the Whitney Forum, falling by a combined score of 16-5. Saturday night’s rematch will be played in the Zoo.

“I think at home we’re just more comfortable and we just play our game. We obviously have to figure out how to play up there though because we could face them again in the playoffs. Obviously it’s a lot easier playing at the Palace, but we have to figure out the road as well,” concluded Shepherd.

“We’ve obviously gone up there and not played our best, so this weekend is going to be huge for our group and we hope to win the season series. We just need better preparation, and we need to go in and be the better team and silence the crowd because it’s crazy up there. The biggest thing is getting them out of it and just working hard.”

Puck drop Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
