Mustangs clinch first place with shootout loss in Flin Flon

Mar 2, 2025 | 7:10 PM

Although it wasn’t the result they hoped for, as far as the loss was concerned, there was still a very big silver lining for the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday night.

Melfort fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Flin Flon Bombers at the Whitney Forum, however, a single point was all the Mustangs needed to clinch first place in the SJHL standings.

The Stangs are currently 10 points ahead of the Bombers, with Flin Flon having only five games left on their schedule.

This means at worst, both teams would be tied with 84 points, however, the Blue and Green would hold the tie-breaker thanks to the season series win.

Melfort scored early in the game, just 2:54 in to be exact, thanks to an Ashton Paul powerplay marker.

Paul scored another one later in the game, against his former squad, however, it was disallowed.

The game then stayed 1-0 for another nearly 53 minutes, before Koen Senft tied the game, also coming on the powerplay.

Neither squad would score in the five-minute, 3-on-3 overtime, which pushed the game to a shootout.

The Mustangs went 0-for-3 on Matthew Kieper in the skills competition, as Carter Cormier scored on the Bombers’ third chance, ending the contest 2-1.

Kristian Coombs had 43 saves for Melfort in the loss.

The Mustangs will next place on Wednesday, when they host the Yorkton Terriers.
