Showcasing their depth

Mustangs begin final stretch against Yorkton

Mar 5, 2025 | 2:36 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have just six games remaining on their schedule this season, the first of which begins tonight, at home, against the Yorkton Terriers.

As far as points are concerned, the Mustangs aren’t in need of any more, as they’ve already wrapped up first place in the SJHL standings.

This will give Melfort the flexibility to give some of their best players a game off or two during these next two weeks, as well as utilize their depth players to a higher degree.

These next six games could even see a lot of Affiliate Players get their first reps in the league, as the Stangs look to give experience to some future pipeline players.

Regardless of who is out on the ice, however, it’s a certainty that the Blue and Green will still do all they can to win and gain even more momentum heading into the playoffs.

The Mustangs are 3 and 0 against the Terriers this season, outscoring them 15-5.

Last time Yorkton was in Melfort was back on Jan. 11, which resulted in a 5-1 Stangs victory.

The Terriers are currently hungry for points, as they’re in a very tight standings battle with just five games to go.

Yorkton is just three points back of the Weyburn Red Wings for third place in league standings, but are also just six points ahead of the number seven Humboldt Broncos.

While tonight’s contest may mean more for them, they will still have to earn it against a well-coached Blue and Green team with plenty of championship DNA, that simply won’t roll over.

The fourth and final meeting between these two clubs on the year, barring a playoff run-in, will go at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Northern Lights Palace.
