Mar 6, 2025 | 9:07 AM

The Melfort Mustangs stayed perfect against the Yorkton Terriers on Wednesday night.

Melfort hosted Yorkton for the fourth and final meeting of the season, and completed the season series sweep in the process.

Previously 3-0-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) against the Terriers this year, outscoring them 15-5, the Mustangs added to it with a 4-1 victory on Wednesday.

The Stangs trailed 1-0 after the first period, as former member of the Blue and Green, David Coyle, had the game’s opening goal.

Melfort would later tie the game on the powerplay, midway through the second period, as Reilley Kotai netted his first of two on the night, his league-leading 32nd and 33rd goals of the season.

After a 1-1 tie after two periods, the Mustangs would then surge in the final frame, beginning with that second Kotai goal, just over a minute in.

Captain Ty Thornton would then give the Stangs some insurance midway through the stanza, before Ashton Paul put the game on ice less than a minute later, giving his club the 4-1 cushion.

Blue and Green netminder Kristian Coombs stopped 20 of the 21 shots that came his way, picking up his league-leading 24th win of the season.

Coombs also dropped his goals-against-average to a flat 2.00 and increased his save percentage to .928, both top two in the SJHL.

Melfort went 2-for-2 on the powerplay and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, improving both their top-ranked units.

The Mustangs sit first in powerplay percentage at 25.6 and first in penalty kill percentage at 86.2.

The Stangs will have the day off Thursday before playing at home again Friday, this time against their rival Nipawin Hawks.

Saturday will then be the Blue and Green’s award banquet, before they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves Sunday afternoon.
