Rivalry renewed

Hawks and Mustangs close season series Friday at the Palace

The Nipawin Hawks and Melfort Mustangs will close their season series Friday renewing the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) hottest rivalry.

Melfort has controlled the previous seven games mostly picking up six wins, the Hawks have one victory and a pair of points for losses in extra time. The Hawks are winding down the season with just three games left but have played inspired hockey down the stretch and are 7-2-0-1 in their last 10 games. Head Coach tad Kozun said the team will continue to play strong over the final trio of games.

“We’re looking forward to just continuing to play the way we know we can and continue to build,” Kozun said.

Nipawin has won two in a row including snapping the Millionaires’ 11-game winning streak Tuesday while avoiding the season sweep by Melville. Melfort is the hottest team in the league riding another first place finish and a 12-game point steak. Kozun said his team is looking forward to one last challenge against the reigning champions.

“It’s obviously a good test going against the best team in the league,” Kozun added. “We’ve played them well for the most part this year and we are looking forward to one more Litmus Test with our group against a team with championship pedigree, so we know where we need to get to.”

Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace. The final broadcast of Nipawin Chrysler Dodge Hawks Hockey on 750 Beach Radio will start at 7:15 p.m.
