Another big third

Mustangs come back from early deficit against Hawks

Mar 8, 2025 | 5:16 PM

It took less than 10 seconds on Friday night for the Melfort Mustangs to trail the Nipawin Hawks.

Just six seconds in, Hawks’ forward Mason Karakochuk netted his 19th of the season to give Nipawin the very early 1-0 lead on the road.

That score would last until the last six minutes of the second period when Mustangs’ d-man Zach Turner tied the game with his seventh of the year.

Karakochuk would then immediately respond, getting his second of the game on the powerplay, just 65 seconds later.

Melfort would then trail 2-1 until the final eight minutes of the game, where they completely took over.

With 7:38 left, Reilley Kotai scored his league-leading 34th to even the game at two.

The Stangs would then score three times in the final four minutes to blow the game open and record a 5-2 win.

Danton Cox got the game-winner, his sixth of the campaign, with 3:50 left. 31 seconds later Kotai got his second of the game, and Bryson Aikens scored his second of the year with five seconds left, into the empty net, to officially seal it.

The Blue and Green now host their awards banquet this evening at the Kerry Vickar Centre, celebrating one another’s accomplishments so far.

They will then host the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Sunday afternoon for a 3 p.m. matinee.
