Four Saskatchewan projects honoured with Saskatchewan Municipal Awards

Mar 10, 2025 | 10:46 AM

Four projects from 10 separate municipalities are being recognized with the 18th Annual Saskatchewan Municipal Awards.

The Town of Bredenbury and the Bredenbury Community Daycare received the Top Municipal Initiative award for its establishment of a town-owned daycare. The business was established to address the lack of childcare options for residents, and encourage new families to move to the area. The centre is now in a renovated school which also houses the firehall, the Lions Club and private businesses.

The RM of Enniskillen No. 3 also received the Top Rural Municipal Initiative after acquiring a section of land along the Souris River. While initially planned for gravel extraction, the land was seen as its potential for pastureland. The RM fenced the area, and established a community grazing plan. Future plans include offering pasture tours for groups and educating the public on carbon sequestration, regenerative agriculture, animal impact, stock density and soil arbor.

The City of Swift Current received the Top Urban Municipal Initiative for its Plewis Automative Group Inclusive Park. The city created the inclusive park that was designed to incorporate the seven principles of Universal Play. The park includes several accessible components including symbol communication boards, double-wide ramps, a wheelchair glider, braille panels, several swings including a wheelchair accessible swing and a sensory play centre.

The Twin Rivers District, including the towns of Duck Lake, Hauge, Hepburn, Rosthern, Waldheim and the RM’s of Rosthern No. 403 and Duck Lake No. 463 received the Regional Co-operation Award. The seven municipalities worked together to provide three major services to their region. That includes comprehensive management of Fire and Rescue Services, The Emergency Measures Organization and a Community Safety Officer program.

The winners were selected by a committee that reviewed 12 nominations submitted on behalf of 34 Saskatchewan municipalities.

The committee members include:

  • Malcolm Eaton, former Mayor of Humboldt and former Vice-President of Cities for SUMA;
  • Wendy Gowda, Municipal Advisor, former Administrator for the RM of LeRoy No. 339 and Past President of RMAA;
  • Keith Comstock, Executive in Residence at the Johnson Shoyama School of Public Policy;
  • Harvey Malanowich, Reeve of RM of Sliding Hills No. 273 and former SARM Board Member;
  • Jim Toye, former City Manager for the City of Prince Albert; and
  • Christine Dyck, former Administrator for the RM of Lost River and Town of Allen.
