Carrot River wrestlers fare well at Regionals, Provincials

Carrot River Valley School (CRVS) students involved in wrestling have had a busy couple of weeks recently, competing in regional and provincial tournaments, one of which came right at home.

Back on Mar. 1, the school hosted the regional wrestling championships, bringing close to 200 wrestlers from across the province.

From regionals, five Carrot River students and one student from L.P Miller in Nipawin, qualified for provincials by finishing in the top four of their weight class.

Provincials were then hosted at the University of Regina this past weekend, with a pair of Carrot River wrestlers earning silver medals.

“I am proud that our kids who come from a small school were able to compete at such a high level. The program has gained a lot of respect from the wrestling community and our kids are great ambassadors for the North East, their community, their school, and themselves. I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to be their coach,” said CRVS wrestling coach, Kevin Duchscherer.

“For some of our wrestlers, it was their first time at provincials and for one of our wrestlers, it was her third time. Regardless of if they had been there or not, they were all excited to have the opportunity to represent their community, their school, and themselves. They all left it all on the mat and did the best they could, and some of them were rewarded with medals because of it.”

At the earlier regional tournament, the Carrot River girls’ team finished runner-up in the 3A division, while the boys were regional champions in the 3A category.

Individually, Jessika Harder won gold in her weight class, while Brady Thesen and Paola Paniagua-Beriguete won silver, and Landon Larson won bronze for Carrot River. McKenna Smits won bronze for Nipawin.

At provincials, the girls’ team finished second once again, while Harder and Paniague-Beriguete took home a pair of silvers.

“At our regional tournament, we had a lot of spectators come out to support our athletes and I think that really helped them qualify for provincials. Our fans were excited to experience the sport of wrestling, a lot for the first time and I think it just really opened their eyes to the level of talent we have up here,” Duchscherer added.

“Then, throughout the week ahead of provincials, our whole team continuously showed up to practice, even though a lot of their seasons were over. It just showcased the level of support our team had for each other as they kept working with them to prepare them for provincials, despite the early morning 7 am practice times before school… it was just great to see all the hard work put in.”
