Hawks conclude season versus Humboldt

The Nipawin Hawks will conclude the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season with a home ice matchup against the Humboldt Broncos on Friday.

The Hawks have won seven of their last 10 games and will look for the season split against Humboldt. The Broncos are battling to remain sixth in the SJHL standings going into the final weekend of the year.

Head coach Tad Kozun said the team will look to end on a high note in game 56.

“We are looking forward to it,” Kozun told northeastNOW after the final game day meeting with his group. “We want to continue down the same path. We have been playing some good hockey and want to make sure we end on a high note especially in front of our home fans. It’s a big game for Humboldt, but we’ve been playing spoiler for two months now and want to continue that.”

Nipawin is coming off a 5-4 overtime win against Flin Flon on Tuesday. Humboldt lost 3-2, also on Tuesday in Weyburn.

The Hawks have been eliminated from the playoff race for a few weeks now, but the commitment of his players haven’t waivered and the last game for the group won’t be any different despite the disappointment of the season coming to a close.

“It really is, we’re playing our best hockey right now at the end of the year. The first half took us some time and we were patient with the guys. The patience is being rewarded right now for how they are playing so they’ve come together. It’s unfortunate this group can’t keep going, especially the way we’re playing and how much work they have put in, but that’s hockey and you have to take the positives of how we have been playing lately,” he said.

Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
