Regular Season Finale

Mustangs crush Hounds, set for final game in Wilcox

Mar 16, 2025 | 1:06 PM

The Melfort Mustangs made light work of the Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday night.

Melfort hosted Notre Dame for their final home game of the season, downing them by a score of 7-1.

Now the two clubs will meet again Sunday afternoon for the regular season finale in Wilcox, in what will be the last game in Notre Dame Hounds history.

“We just stuck to our game plan and it started from our D zone out. We had to really make sure we dialled that in and it just led to good offence, and then once we were in the ozone, we just knew what to do,” said Mustangs’ forward Reilley Kotai, regarding the 7-1 victory.

“We expect Sunday to be much closer because it’s their last game in history. We still want to go in there and spoil their party, so it should be a good game… it’ll be cool to be a part of it because no one will ever play an SJHL game there again. We want to go in there and win and get hot before playoffs.”

Speaking of the postseason, Melfort now knows who they will see in Round 1 of the playoffs.

After the La Ronge Ice Wolves fell to the Flin Flon Bombers on Saturday night, the Kindersley Klippers officially locked up the eighth and final spot, as they will be the Mustangs’ first-round playoffs.

The Stangs will be bringing in the league’s top scorer to the postseason, as after his three-point night on Saturday, Kotai finished with the most goals and most points this year.

“Regular season history doesn’t matter, playoffs are a new season, and they’re obviously gonna work hard and work their bag off and give us all that they got. We’re gonna have to work hard and be prepared for them,” Kotai added.

“It’s unbelievable to be the top scorer, I have to thank the coaching staff for giving me this opportunity and my linemates for being great to play with all year. Without them, I don’t get this, so I’m just super thankful to everyone who has helped me and I’m excited to keep it going.”

Puck drop Sunday afternoon between the Hounds and the Blue and Green is set for 4:30 p.m.
