The SJHL Awards were announced Wednesday afternoon and three different Mustangs were recognized for their successes this season.

First off, head coach Trevor Blevins won his second Coach of the Year Award.

After leading the Mustangs to their first SJHL Championship in eight years and a national final appearance last season, Blevins brought back a solid returning core while adding key pieces this year.

Overall, Melfort won 46 games, a new franchise record, and tied a modern SJHL record with 17 wins in a row.

The top-seeded Stangs also led the league in goal differential, along with powerplay and penalty kill percentage.

Second up was first-year Blue and Green defenceman and 20-year-old Tisdale native, Nic Andrusiak.

Andrusiak came to Melfort after spending nearly two full seasons in the WHL, quickly becoming one of the best backend players in the league.

On the season, Andrusiak, an assistant captain, put up 31 points in 44 games, pairing up with Mustangs’ captain Ty Thornton in all situations.

For his efforts, Andrusiak was named the Defenceman of the Year.

Finally, Reilley Kotai was recognized as the league’s top scorer this season.

With 39 goals and 77 points, in just 53 games, Kotai led the SJHL in both of those categories, narrowly missing out on Forward of the Year and MVP.

Kotai is also in his first season with the Stangs, having previously spent time in the NAHL and BCHL.

Kotai’s older brother Josh was the Goalie of the Year and a league champion a few seasons ago with the Battlefords North Stars.

Melfort native Zac Somers was also a finalist for Sask Player of the Year, while Mustang netminder Kristian Coombs was a finalist for Goaltender of the Year.

Blue and Green defenceman Nolan Roberts is currently a finalist for the RBC Community Ambassador Award, with voting still open until April 13th.
